Winter sowing ... revisited

8/2/2016

Last year at this time I wrote about the practice of winter sowing -- that is planting seeds in containers and placing them outside to overwinter.  See Sow seeds of Joy, but sow them in winter.  In this post, I have some additional resources to help you get started with this fun method of starting plants.

View this step-by-step guide to winter sowing on getbusygardening.com.  I love the suggested seed list provided s not all seeds are suited to this sowing method.

Master Gardener Robert Pavlis has prepared a winter sowing video demonstrating the basics of selecting containers, preparing them and planting seeds.
Gardeners in my part of the province have been busy digging.  Digging snow, that is.  A good layer of snow offers welcome protection for sleeping plants, but snow is useful too for settling in seed containers.  So get busy.  Check your stash of seeds and find some containers, plant and wait for the magic, come spring!
