Dear Garden

I am dreaming about you. I always do this time of year, especially when the snow sifts down and tucks you into your beds.

In one dream, you are filled with sunlight and colour, as though you just returned from a tropical vacation.  I imagine you dumping your floral suitcases on my doorstep.  Souvenirs tumble out – handmade things I know you will use to accessorize your favorite corners.  There are pictures of the exotics you’ve met – hibiscus, glorious fuschias, calla lilies, and tall birds of paradise. I feel like you are someone different, a garden I don’t even know.

In another dream, you awaken in a happy mood. You declare the spring sun and rain, “Irresistible!” In a madly generous gesture you throw tulips, crocus and daffodils across your beds. It is the best start, for your earliest blooms are always the most encouraging. You make me want to dig.

Oh I know that as spring turns into summer, you won’t disappoint. Together over the years we’ve buried sweet surprises beneath the soil … Peonies blush into bloom.  Allium reach unabashedly for the sky.  Asparagus, raspberries and garlic remember how much they are appreciated.

Garden, I must say you look beautiful as your sleeping self. I will wait for your rest to end. Just one question, though, are you dreaming too?
