Cultivated Words:  Autumn

10/11/2014

Comments

A skiff of snow has come and gone in my neighbourhood.  Already I am nostalgic for those crisp blue skies, for that etching light that lifts autumn's blazing colour into its glory.  A last tribute then – in words and images – before we leave this season ...

"Delicious autumn! My very soul is wedded to it, and if I were a bird
I would fly about the earth seeking the successive autumns.
"
― George Eliot

“Two sounds of autumn are unmistakable ...
the hurrying rustle of crisp leaves blown along the street by a gusty wind,
and the gabble of a flock of migrating geese.”

― Hal Borland

"The falling leaves, all over the forest, are protecting the roots of my plants.
Only look at what is to be seen, and you will have garden enough,
without deepening the soil in your yard.
We have only to elevate our view a little to see the whole forest as a garden."
― Henry David Thoreau
from 'Autumnal Tints'

“There is something in the autumn that is native to my blood—
Touch of manner, hint of mood;
And my heart is like a rhyme,
With the yellow and the purple and the crimson keeping time.”
― Bliss Carman

"Autumn wins you best by this its mute appeal to sympathy for its decay."
― Robert Browning

― Jim Bishop
