Dear Garden

Hello again, Garden. The weeks have slipped by and I haven't taken the time to write this note of thanks.  Do forgive me for being neglectful, especially when you've been so thoughtful all season.

First, let me say thank you for taking good care of so many of our old friends, like the so-fragrant pink phlox.  It was wonderful to see them blooming again this year.

The rain seemed relentless this summer.  While I wanted to complain, you wisely grew on, letting the moisture nourish the trees and coax helpful toads to shelter among the plants.  On sunny days, I saw your smile in every bed.

You are so accepting. Have I told you how much I appreciate that?  You didn't mind that I moved the 'Happy Returns' Daylilies and squeezed 'Silver Queen' Artemesia into pots to control her wandering ways.  You made room for two 'Caramel' Heuchera with their surprising tawny foliage.  I think the companion beds worked quite well this year, don't you?

The black hollyhocks you gave me – well, what a lovely surprise.  Do you think they might be Alcea rosea var. nigra 'The Watchman'?  This is a heirloom plant, isn't it.  Anyway, I've saved the seeds and as always, your thoughtfulness was appreciated.

Looking back, I see it was a good year together with new plants, some necessary lessons, and plenty of pictures to savour this winter.

A parting shot?  It's you, Garden, in that layered autumn skirt with the white phlox crinoline.  It's an old favorite you save for dancing in the last fresh-breezed days of the season.  Yes, you do remind me to simply enjoy –  whatever the season brings.

Thank you, as always, for being your green and flowered self.
